Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a science with research activity in the areas of image processing, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, machine learning etc. In the past, AI has been sometimes perceived as a kind of magical art: this has prevented the industry from using AI-based techniques, since it was difficult to convince people that such techniques can actually produce a return on investment. On the contrary, in recent years industrial AI has established itself as a systematic discipline, which focuses on the development, validation and implementation of various algorithms based on artificial intelligence for industrial applications with sustainable performance.
In this speech the role of artificial intelligence in Industry 4.0 will be discussed. In addition, some case studies will be presented in order to show how AI can add value to business processes.

Carlo Sansone is Full Professor of Computer Science at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica e Tecnologie dell’Informazione of the University of Naples Federico II. His basic interests cover the areas of image analysis, pattern recognition and machine learning. From an applicative point of view, his main contributions were in the fields of biomedical image analysis, biometrics and image forensics. He coordinated several projects, mainly in the areas of biomedical images interpretation and network intrusion detection. Prof. Sansone has authored over 200 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He was also co-editor of three special issues and of three books.
